The Ombudsperson, Naim Qelaj, hosted the Children’s Assembly of the Capital, a legitimate body representing children in decision-making at the local level, which is an environment where the freedoms and rights of children are constantly promoted.
In his introductory speech, the Ombudsperson spoke about his mandate and competences in the protection of children’s rights, and about the special department that works for children’s rights, from promotion and protection, to the investigation of complaints.
The Ombudsperson also informed those present about the work done during the past year, where the institution received a total of 79 complaints related to children’s rights. From this number, 46 cases have been opened for investigation, while complaints have been made against municipalities, courts, ministries, including Social Work Centers.
The children highlighted other concerns including the issue of children’s privacy, school safety, the lack of school psychologists, bullying, and children beggars in the streets.
The Children’s Assembly of Capital has 51 children members between the ages of 12 and 15. It was established for the first time in 2015, they have a 2-year mandate and operates according to the Municipal Regulation for the establishment and operation of the Children’s Assembly.
