    Prisoners should have access to independent complaints body

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has welcomed the recommendation by Inspector of Prisons, Judge Michael Reilly, that the Ombudsman be given the powers to investigate complaints from prisoners. Judge Reilly was speaking at ‘The Ombudsman behind Bars’ conference in Dublin on Thursday 12 May. The conference heard that Ireland is breaching human rights by not allowing adult prisoners have their complaints independently investigated.

    The Office of The Ombudsman held a seminar on electronic road pricing today to look at the Government's policy and measures for alleviating traffic congestion as well as details of the proposed electronic road pricing scheme.     Maribyrnong City Council has treated disadvantaged people harshly by refusing to cancel parking fines in cases where exceptional circumstances justified cancellation, the Victorian Ombudsman has found. Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the council’s practices were lacking in fairness and discretion when compared with five other metropolitan councils.

    This year, the Ontario Ombudsman’s annual investigative training course, “Sharpening Your Teeth” (SYT) was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from the 5th to the 7th of November 2018. Senior Ombudsman staff have trained hundreds of ombudsmen, investigators and other watchdog staff at this Toronto course and at customized, on-site SYT courses throughout the world – most recently in Manitoba, Canada; The Hague, Netherlands; and Anchorage, Alaska.

    Ombudsman welcomes scheme for clients who lost adoption fees

    Irish Ombudsman and IOI President, Peter Tyndall, has welcomed the Irish government’s decision to establish a scheme to repay clients who lost money following the closure of an adoption agency in 2015. The scheme is being set up following extensive discussions between the Irish Ombudsman, the Adoption Authority of Ireland, and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

    The Ombudsman Nova Scotia, Canada, has just published its Annual Report for the period 2018-2019. The Nova Scotia Office of the Ombudsman handled 2,278 complaints, inquiries, and youth contacts in the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
