    1st ever visit of Thai Chief Ombudsman to Karachi

    Human Rights Symposium held in Barcelona

    IOI Europe’s Regional President Rafael Ribó hosted a workshop on human rights challenges, held in Barcelona from 3 – 4 April 2017, to resume the debate on the regression of rights launched a year ago. In light of recent political developments emphasis was particularly put on “Populism? Regression of Rights and the Role of the Ombudsman”. Representatives from IOI member institutions from all over Europe participated at this workshop to discuss and analyse the current situation and the role of the Ombudsman in this regard.

    Commission on Administrative Justice accepted as member of the IOI

    At its New York meeting in September 2013, the IOI Board of Directors acknowledged that the Commission on Administrative Justice fulfilled the criteria set out in the IOI By-laws and accept the Commission of Administrative Justice as Voting member of the IOI.

    A complete report of the accident captioned “Cognizance of Tragic Incident of Death of 57 persons in Bus-Truck Accident” has been published. It has been finalised on the taking of Suo Moto notice of the incident by the Federal Ombudsman of Pakistan, Salman Faruqui.

    Public Defender presents Information Bulletin

    On February 5, 2016, the Public Defender held a press conference, where he presented the January information bulletin. In the greeting of the bulletin the Public Defender talked about the changes that took place in the Public Defender's office and throughout the country last year. He stressed the importance of the opening of the Academy of Human Rights and the launch of a hotline, the election of Public Defender as a full member of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions and the granting of the right to take photos in prison.

    Algorithmes discriminatoires : le Défenseur des droits et la CNIL réunissent les experts

    Jeudi 28 et vendredi 29 mai, le Défenseur des droits, en partenariat avec la CNIL, organise un séminaire d’experts autour des algorithmes discriminatoires.     ECRI highlights 2020: Inequalities related to COVID-19, growing religious intolerance, backlash against LGBTI people

    The Council of Europe’s anti-racism commission (ECRI) in its 2020 annual report published today, ahead of the International Day against Racial Discrimination marked on 21 March, identified four key challenges Europe was facing last year. These are: mitigating the disproportional impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on vulnerable groups, tackling deep-rooted racism in public life, combating anti-Muslim racism and antisemitism in the face of terrorism, and addressing the backlash against the protection of human rights of LGBTI people.

    Meet the new Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson

    Mr. François Boileauis the third person appointed to the position of Canada’s Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson. Prior to this nomination, Mr. Boileau was the French Language Services Commissioner as an independent Officer of the Ontario Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2019.

    New Public Services Ombudsman for Wales appointed

    Michelle Morris took office as the new Public Services Ombudsman for Wales on 1 April 2022. She was previously Managing Director of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council.  Prior to that she worked for Highland Council in Scotland, for 10 years.

    World Board attends Reception and Charity Event at Ukrainian Embassy

    Prior to the commencement of the World Board meeting in Austria, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Austria, Dr Vasyl Khymynets, and Voices of Children co-hosted a reception and charity event at the Ukrainian Embassy. The President was honoured to speak at this event alongside Ambassador Khymynets and Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets.

    Ombudsman Saskatchewan tables Annual Report 2013

    Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman, Mary McFadyen, tabled the office’s annual report for 2013. She acknowledged the work done prior to her arrival in April 2014 and thanked Acting Ombudsman Janet Mirwaldt for her leadership and direction since July 2013. Going forward, McFadyen said she plans to keep an eye on the way the province is providing services to a growing population.

    Best Practice Paper on Ombudsman outreach practices

    The IOI presents a new Best Practice Paper on “Outreach practices from Ombudsman around the world”. The paper builds on the regional exchange prior to and during the 13th IOI World Conference and reflects the results of this exchange among IOI members. It was developed by the office of the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands and presents outreach practices from IOI members across various countries.

    Free SYT training for I.O.I. members

    A regional subvention was granted to the North American region to hold a two-day SYT training workshop in October 2011 prior to the United States Ombudsman Annual (USOA) Conference. The training course will be presented  by Ontario Ombudsman André Marin. We record our thanks for his continued support in this way.

    Ombudsman examines situation of homeless people

    The new Mayor of Budapest has “dismissed” homeless people from the prior underpasses in the Hungarian capital. Consequently, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Civil Rights examined the situation of homeless people in Budapest in the winter 2010/2011.
