Virtual consultation for the IE SOGI’s work plan 2021-2023

Chief Ombudsman calls for immediate halt to use of spit hoods on vulnerable prisoners
Following inspections at the minimum-to-high security Christchurch Women's Prison and Wellington's Arohata Prison, Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier called on the Department of Corrections to never again use spit hoods on vulnerable prisoners including young people and disabled people.

Combating discrimination takes important place in the activities of the Ombudsman

Ombudsman received over 5,500 complaints in 2018
In 2018, the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Finland received 5,591 complaints. The number is very high, although it falls slightly from the all-time record of 6,192 in 2017. The administrative branches with the highest number of complaints in 2018 were social services (1,097), the police (632) and healthcare (612).

Concern about routine strip searching and high incidence of force and restraint in women’s prison
Female prisoners in Victoria’s main women’s prison are being routinely strip searched, in what Ombudsman Deborah Glass has described as a “humiliating, degrading and undignified practice”. Tabling the Implementing OPCAT in Victoria: report and inspection of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Victorian Parliament, Ms Glass said an independent inspection had uncovered some serious issues.
