    Invitation to the seminar on the "Law of the Ararteko: Proposals for the Future. Rethinking Ombuds institutions"

    The Ararteko – Ombudsman of the Basque Country and the Basque Parliament have jointly organized the seminar “The Law of the Ararteko. Proposals for the Future. Rethinking Ombuds institutions” as part of the “Legeen geroa – The Future of Legislation” cycle, which will be held at the Basque Parliament on 12 and 13 June 2023.     Workshop for NPMs in Latin America

    The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI), in close cooperation with the Association for the Prevention of Torture and the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico, held a workshop for National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs) in the Latin American Region. The workshop was held in Mexico City and put a specific focus on the situation in the first hours of detention of women and LGBTI+ persons.

    Ombudswoman requests constitutional review of the Mandatory Health Insurance Act amendments

    Ombudswoman Tena Šimonović Einwalter submitted a request for a constitutional review of certain provisions of the amendments to the Mandatory Health Insurance Act to the Constitutional Court at the end of June. According to these provisions, some citizens are required to personally visit the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance every three months to maintain their health insurance coverage.

    Ombudsman of Curaçao elected as Regional President for Caribbean and Latin-America

    The Caribbean and Latin American region of the IOI, one of the six regions, elected the Ombudsman of Curaçao, Mr. Keursly Concincion, as its Regional President on June, 25th 2024. Mr. Concincion was the only candidate standing for the position. The current appointment is for four years.

    Open meetings notice time disputed

    The question of what constitutes a 24-hour notice to the public under Iowa’s open-meetings law became an issue of contention a few days ago. Ombudsman Ruth Cooperrider warned that the Iowa Public Information Board’s ruling opens the door for Iowa governments to elude the requirements of the law, whose intention it is that the information must be easily accessible to the public for at least 24 hours before meetings are held.

    Protecting human rights in prisons while preventing radicalization - a guide for detention monitors

    Preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (VERLT) is an area of increasing focus at the international, regional and national levels. This also applies to the prison context, due to fears that prisons may represent breeding grounds for VERLT. In a joint project, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and Penal Reform International (PRI) prepared a guide, which seeks to provide detention monitors with an enhanced understanding of VERLT and discusses the key human rights issues arising in the context of preventing and countering VERLT in prisons.
