IOI | ANNUAL REPORT 2020/2021

The IOI membership year 2020/2021 was once again shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2021, the 12th IOI World Conference and General Assembly had to be hosted as virtual events. We were all disappointed not to be able to meet in person, but the Office of the Ombudsman of Ireland managed to deliver an exceptionally successful online event nonetheless, which enabled participants to enjoy the full conference experience with remarkable speakers, interesting workshops and a wide possibility for exchange.

Another milestone was achieved in December 2020, when the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the amended version of the UN Resolution on the Role of Ombudsman and Mediator Institutions in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Good Governance and the Rule of Law. The newly adopted resolution is a strong endorsement of the key principles of Ombudsman institutions, such as independence, fairness and impartiality, and it increases worldwide recognition for the work of Ombudsman in the human rights field.

The Annual Report furthermore reports about membership developments, training initiatives, the latest publications in the series of IOI Best Practice Papers, the IOI’s support for Ombudsman under threat, its finances and the regional subsidies programme. In addition to this, we are happy to once again include comprehensive reports from the six IOI world regions.
