EUROPE | European Network of Ombudsmen meets in Dublin to discuss good administration and the rights of the citizen

On 16 and 17 September the next Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly and outgoing European Ombudsman Professor Nikiforos Diamandouros, will co-host the 9th National Seminar of the European Network of Ombudsmen. Forty National Ombudsmen from all over Europe will meet in Dublin Castle to exchange ideas and experiences in order to promote best practice among European Ombudsmen.

This year’s seminar focuses on good administration and the rights of the citizen. Among the topics to be discussed are ‘Innovation in Ombudsman Offices’ and ‘Making the Citizen Count’. The seminar will be opened by Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, Mr Brian Hayes. President Michael D Higgins hosted the delegates at a reception in Áras an Uachtaráin on Tuesday 17 September.

The outgoing European Ombudsman, Professor Nikiforos Diamandouros, was among those making a keynote speech at the event. Emily O’Reilly, spoke on the ‘Role of the administration in serving the citizen’. Ms O’Reilly takes up the role of European Ombudsman on 1 October next.
