The Council of Europe has published factsheets on “Protecting the Rights of Roma” to draw attention to the marginalization of the Roma people in Europe and promote their full integration.
Up to 12 million Roma people are estimated to live in Europe and their community is one of the most persecuted minorities in Europe, suffering from racial insults and facing discrimination on a daily basis. Roma people are often deprived of the most basic prerequisites such as an unrestricted access to education, the medical system or the job market.
The education of both Roma and non-Roma is essential to promote and achieve the community’s full integration into society. The factsheets developed by the Council of Europe therefore aim at informing about the history and culture of the Roma people in order to reduce the gap and bring the different cultures closer together.
