LATIN AMERICA | FIO holds General Assembly in Puerto Rico

The Federation of Ibero-American Ombudsman (Federación Iberoamericana del Ombudsman, FIO) held its General Assembly in Puerto Rico. The Chairman of the National Human Rights Commissionof Mexico, Raúl Plascencia Villanueva, was elected President of the FIO.

Mr Raúl Plascencia Villanueva, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commissionof Mexico, was elected as the President of the Federation of Ibero-American Ombudsman (FIO) during its 18th General Assembly, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 4 to 7 November 2013. Mr Villanueva will follow Anselmo Sella, National Ombudsman of Argentina, in this important role.

Furthermore, the General Assembly unanimously confirmed Dr. Edgardo José Bistoletti, Ombudsman of the Province of Santa Fe, as the representative of the provincial Ombudsmen of Argentina within FIO. It is the third time in a row that Mr Bistoletti was elected to this position by his colleagues.  

The newly elected Vice-Presidents of FIO are the Ombudsman of Panama, Lilia Herrera Mow, the Ombudsman of Portugal, José Faria Costa, the Ombudsman of Paraguay, Manuel María Monje, the Ombudsman of Bolivia, Rolando Villena Villegas and the Ombudsman of Sinaloa (Mexico), Juan José Ríos.

The key focus of FIO is to enhance cooperation between Ombudsman institutions within the Ibero-American community, to provide them with a forum for the exchange of experiences and to promote and strengthen the concept and the institution of the Ombudsman.

At the moment the FIO includes member institutions on a national, regional and local level from 20 different countries (i.e. Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela).
