THAILAND | Former Chief Ombudsman Elected as President of the Senate

The Office of the Ombudsman, Thailand, is very pleased to inform the ombudsman community that former Chief Ombudsman of Thailand, General Teeradej Meepien, has recently been elected as the new President of the Senate of Thailand.

General Teeradej Meepien had been serving the military for a long time before he retired and was appointed as Ombudsman from 2003, and became Chief Ombudsman in 2007. General Teeradej Meepien was one of the key persons, with colleagues' support, who hosted the 11th Asian Ombudsman Association (AOA) Conference in Bangkok, Thailand during 2-5 November 2009 with a fruitful deliberation. After he had retired from Chief Ombudsman, he worked for his successor, Mr. Pramote Chotimongkol, as advisor. He resigned from being advisor and ran for candidacy of Thai senator. With his personal background and experience, he has been elected by the Selective Committee, chaired by the President of the Constitutional Court to be the senator for 6 year term. Among 3 candidates, he has been confided by other senators to elect him as the new President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Thailand.

In addition to the former Chief Ombudsman, the Office of the Ombudsman, Thailand, is very grateful to convey to its colleagues worldwide that Mr. Pichet Soontornpipit – first Ombudsman of Thailand who laid the foundation of the Thai Ombudsman Office – has been elected as a senator for 6 year term as well.
