Lithuania | Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office appointed

On 25 April 2013, Augustinas Normantas was appointed to the position of the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office of the Republic of Lithuania. On the same day, Raimondas Šukys swore an oath in the Parliament (Seimas) and was appointed as Seimas Ombudsman.

Mr. Normantas will be investigating complaints regarding the activities of officers of state government institutions and agencies. He has filled the position as Seimas Ombudsman since 2005. Before that he had been a judge of the Constitutional Court for nine years and the Deputy Chairman of the Chief Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania. Moreover, Augustinas Normantas has almost 40 years of experience in scientific pedagogical work at the Law Faculty of Vilnius University.

Furthermore, the Lithuanian Parliament appointed Raimondas Šukys as new Seimas Ombudsman. He is responsible for the investigation of activities of officials of municipal institutions and agencies.

Upon the nomination of the Speaker, the Seimas appoints two Seimas Ombudsmen for the term of five years. Under the Law on the Seimas Ombudsmen, a person appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman, before entering the office swears an oath of allegiance to the State of Lithuania.
