Canada | Investigation by the Québec Ombudsman: taxpayers’ rights should be upheld

To avoid the involvement of the courts, Revenu Québec may enter into transactions (settlements) with certain taxpayers. In an investigation report released on February 27, 2020, the Québec Ombudsman revealed that the opposing party’s rights are not always upheld when these transactions are made.

"Avoiding the involvement of the courts in settling disputes is good. However, taxpayers’ rights must be upheld," said Ombudsperson Marie Rinfret.

To provide a better structure for this practice, eight recommendations were made to Revenu Québec by the Québec Ombudsman.
