From 12 to 14 March 2014, the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of National Human Rights Institutions held its 27th Annual Meeting in Geneva. Representatives from more than 100 national human rights institutions (NHRI), states, NGOs, academics and independent experts from across the world attended the meeting.
The overarching theme of the event was the Role of Prevention in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. Discussions centred on NHRI experiences with the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council, the relationship between NHRIs and Parliaments, Women’s Rights and the role of National Actions Plans on Human Rights.
In the course of the meeting, IOI Vice-President and Ombudsman of Namibia, John Walters, and IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter met with ICC Chairman Lawrence Mushwana in order to discuss a Memorandum of Understanding between the ICC and the IOI. The aim is to promote and strengthen the cooperation between the two global organisations after the agreement’s signing in autumn 2014.
