A delegation of the Board of Directors of the European Region of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) is embarking on a two-day visit to Hungary, from the 16th to the 18th of March, responding to the invitation of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary, Akos Kozma.
IOI European Board President and Ombudsman of Greece, Andreas Pottakis and Board member and Ombudsman of Slovenia Peter Svetina, will meet with their host at the border crossings between Hungary and Ukraine to get a first-hand experience of the ongoing crisis and the efforts of the Hungarian authorities to address the needs of the refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.
The IOI has recently issued a statement on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Ukraine whereby the community of Ombudsman institutions expressed its deep concern for the plight of the civilian population in Ukraine and the devastation brought by the war. The IOI urged all parties involved to respect their international obligations and to support all efforts to achieve a de-escalation of hostilities.
