Irish Ombudsman and IOI President Peter Tyndall and Austrian Ombudsman and IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter took part in the annual European Network of Ombudsman Conference on 8-9 March 2018 in Brussels. The conference topics were the future of the EU, current and future challenges for Ombudsmen and cross-border problem solving for EU citizens.
The first session focused on the European pillar of social rights, the Ombudsperson’s role as influencers and the importance of focusing on the present situation of the EU by putting the issue of social rights back on the agenda while setting specific goals for the future of the Europe. The conference participants split into three different workshops on social media, minorities and the migration crisis in the afternoon session of the first day.
On 9 March 2018, Günther Kräuter spoke about cross-border issues, especially concerning family allowances, as one of the panelists of the session on cross-border problem solving for EU citizens. One of the main conclusions of this session was the importance of a better sharing of information between the different European Ombudsman institutions and a pro-active collaboration of the Ombudsman institutions and the EU bodies.
