CANADA | Leveraging the Venice Principles and UN Resolution to promote and protect Ombudsman organizations

Would you like to see your mandate enhanced, your legislative authority clarified, or your funding more secure? Would you like to build a persuasive case for strengthening and improving the legislative foundations of your organization? Do you lack the resources necessary to fulfill your mandate and conduct outreach? Are you facing threats to your independence and autonomy?

The first steps to address these situations are to learn about the internationally endorsed standards for an Ombudsman office, and to consider ways you can use them to inform your parliament, legislative assembly, or governing body and advocate for change.

The Venice Principles and the UN Resolution on the role and mandate of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good administration and the rule of law (A/RES/72/186) are informative declarations and authoritative advocacy tools for strengthening your institution. Whether seeking expanded powers, greater independence, adequate funding, alignment with best practices or protection against threats, these internationally endorsed principles can help make your case.
