On the occasion of the annual meeting of the IOI Board of Directors taking place in Vienna from 27 October 2014 to 29 October 2014, IOI President Dame Beverley Wakem and the President of the Institute of Latin-American Ombudsman (Instituto Latinoamericano del Ombudsman – Defensor del Pueblo, ILO), Dr. Carlos Constenla, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks a significant milestone in the relations of the IOI, its members and its Latin American counterparts.
Created in 1984, the ILO is aimed at encouraging the concept of ombudsmanship, contributing to the reinforcement of democratic processes and promoting and protecting human rights as well as its implementation. Additionally to enhancing the concept of ombudsmanship, the ILO fosters studies related to the concept of ombudsmanship and seeks the creation of networks and cooperation amongst various Ombudsman institutions.
By signing the Memorandum, both institutions recognized that they share similar objectives to strengthen the concept of ombudsmanship, and encouraging existing and new ombudsman institutions in their work of assisting, enhancing and protecting civil and human rights.
