CANADA | New mandate for the Québec Ombudsman

A new law came into force in Québec on May 1, 2017. Under the Act to facilitate the disclosure of wrongdoings relating to public bodies, the Québec Ombudsman is mandated to handles disclosure of wrongdoing committed regarding any public body subject to the Act. From now on, whistleblowers will enjoy reliable, safe and independent recourse.

The Québec Ombudsman’s investigative expertise, its knowledge of Québec’s public services, the competence of its team assigned this new mandate and the soundness of the protective measures put in place empower us to provide reliable recourse in order to shed light on the disclosures that will be brought to us. — Marie Rinfret, Ombudsperson

The Act provides protection against reprisal for whistleblowers or those who cooperate in an audit or investigation stemming from disclosure of a wrongdoing.
