SPAIN | Ombudsman calls for better risk assessment of battered women

The Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, participated in the day ‘Gender violence among teenagers: the new technologies as a tool’. There she called for the improvement of risk detection instruments for battered women, “so that the possibilities of attack are reduced”.

At the closing of the meeting held in Santiago de Compostela and organized by the Valedor do Pobo, the Ombudsman said that even though Spain has advanced legislation on domestic violence, there are still some outstanding challenges.

Thus, she stressed the importance of providing training to young people and teenagers, “especially given the emergence of new forms of social communication”.

Likewise, Soledad Becerril emphasized the “fundamental role played by parents” when promoting a smooth and trusting family communication to inform young people of the necessary precautions in the use of social networks that, in any case, can be used to harass, coerce or embarrass others.

Moreover, she recalled the importance of conveying to young people the right they have to preserve their privacy and honour. Finally, she encouraged to report all possible cases of coercion or interference in the private lives of teenagers.

Among the most recent actions, the Ombudsman highlighted a recommendation accepted by the Directorate General of the Police for evaluating in a more accurately way the degree of risk of battered women with a “case by case” analysis and tracking.
