Sweden | Ombudsman criticizes several prosecutors

After an inspection of the Public Prosecution Office in Halmstad in October 2009, the Ombudsman criticizes several prosecutors because investigations involving young people take too much time.

There are a number of prosecutors at the Public Prosecution Office, which are criticized by the Ombudsman for taking too long to finish cases in which persons under the age of 18 were involved. In these cases, young people have either been involved as suspects or as victims.

JO (the Justice Ombudsman) has examined the handling of eight cases, and also started a criminal investigation of misconduct in one case where the deadline for completing the investigation was exceeded by two years.

Even the Head of the Public Prosecution Office was criticized by the Ombudsman, requesting that he reports the durations of investigations to the Ombudsman in April next year.
