ITALY | Ombudsman Fardelli meets South African Public Protector Gcaleka

On Thursday, 14 December 2023, an online meeting of extraordinary significance took place between Dr. Marino Fardelli, President of the National Coordination of Italian Ombudsmen and Ombudsman of the Lazio Region, and Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka, Public Protector of South Africa. Both were recently elected to their respective boards for Europe and Africa within the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

The meeting not only provided the opportunity for an exchange of congratulations regarding the new roles assumed by the two institutional representatives on the international stage but also marked the initiation of fruitful collaborations on topics related to their respective roles and functions.

Dr. Fardelli and Adv. Gcaleka expressed their determination to work together to promote active and conscious citizenship, emphasizing the fundamental importance of each individual contributing to the construction of a fair and just society.

During the meeting, future prospects for collaboration were discussed to implement concrete projects aimed at promoting civic defense and strengthening the rights of citizens both in Europe and Africa. The common goal is to create synergies between the parties to address global and local challenges more effectively, working together to build stronger and more resilient communities.

President Fardelli and Adv. Gcaleka pledged to strengthen ties between the two entities and facilitate the exchange of best practices to enhance the effectiveness of institutions dedicated to protecting citizens' rights.

The meeting represents a significant step towards promoting international collaboration in the defense of civil rights, reflecting the shared commitment to building a fairer and more solidary world.

Also in attendance were collaborators Ms. Dana Voiat and Ms. Benita Young, supporting Dr. Fardelli and Adv. Gcaleka in their respective roles.
