PORTUGAL | Ombudsman on the UN ombudsman resolution

The Portuguese Ombudsman, Alfredo José de Sousa, participated in Geneva, on 26 September, in a round table organized by the Ombudsman of Morocco on the margins of the 18th session of the Human Rights Council, on the topic of the actions carried out by different mediation institutions and the perspectives for implementation of United Nations Resolution 65/207.

In this Resolution, it is recommended that Member States create ombudsmen and other national institutions for the defence of human rights that are independent and autonomous, as well as strengthen the competences of such institutions where they already exist, in compliance with the Paris Principles.

In his intervention, the Portuguese Ombudsman highlighted the promotion of the appointment of ombudsmen in Mozambique and Cape Verde, whose legislation already provides for its creation, as well as the need for Brazil to create or appoint such an institution, in accordance with the Paris Principles.
