The Office of the Ombudsman of Iowa presented its latest Annual Report for the calendar year 2013, providing a detailed insight into the Ombudsman’s activities and cases as well as legal challenges faced by the institution.
During the past year, the Office of the Ombudsman opened 4,010 cases mostly dealing with complaints or requests for information about state or government agencies. Furthermore, the Office has been conducting complex systemic investigations, for example, upon request by legislators concerning the treatment of residents both at the Veterans and the Juvenile Home.
In her report, the Ombudsman also mentions some of the mayor obstacles she finds herself faced with while carrying out her duties, especially legal challenges, and how they can impede obtaining necessary information or cause significant delays with regard to the investigations.
In July 2013 the Office officially changed its name from “Office of Citizens’ Aide” to “Office of Ombudsman”, since citizens, but also government agencies and the media are more familiar with that term.
