SPAIN | Ombudsman presents NPM Annual Report 2012

The Defensora del Pueblo (Ombudsman of Spain), Soledad Becerril, has presented before the Spanish Parliament the last report of the National Preventive Mechanism against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (NPM).

The report gave an account of the 52 inspection visits made in 2012 to places of deprivation of liberty in 13 of Spain’s regional autonomous communities.

As the result of these visits the NMP has made 118 recommendations, 79 suggestions and 8 reminders of legal duties. Of these visits, 12 have been multi-disciplinary, with legal and forensic medicine experts, psychiatrists and psychologists.

The Spanish version of the NPM Annual Report 2012 is now available on the website of the Ombudsman of Spain.
