The Defensora del Pueblo, Soledad Becerril, travelled to Morocco where she visited several Spanish inmates and participated in a meeting of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsman (AOM).
Accompanied by the consul, Jacobo González Arnau, the Defensora entered the prison of Salé (Rabat), where she met with the eight Spanish citizens who are serving sentences. One of them, affected by Crohn's disease, asked her to mediate in order to allow him to sleep on a mattress.
Soledad Becerril, who is currently First Vice-President of the AOM, also participated in a meeting of the Governing Board of the Association, held in Rabat.
The AOM, created in Marseille in 2008 by the Ombudsmen of Spain, France and Morocco, provides assistance on the protection and guarantee of fundamental rights to more than 280 million citizens. Its objectives include the promotion and defence of fundamental rights in the countries of the region as well as promoting the creation of Ombudsman in those Mediterranean countries where they do not exist yet.
