On 24 November 2016 the interdisciplinary lecture series “One out of five” on the topic of violence against women was opened by Ombudswoman Gertrude Brinek at the premises of the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB).
One out of five women living in Austria is exposed to physical or sexual violence. The Department of forensic medicine of the Medical University in Vienna, in cooperation with the Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters and the Austrian Ombudsman Board is currently organising an interdisciplinary lecture series to actively counteract taboo and trivialisation of this topic.
In order to raise awareness of the wide range of violence against women, experts discussed the topic with regard to different life and social spheres. “Domestic violence is one of the world’s biggest health risks for women and children”, emphasised Andrea Berzlanovich, professor on the Medical University of Vienna.
Seven lectures will be held between 25 November and 12 December. They will illustrate a detailed insight into the background, causes and consequences of the complex topic of “violence against women” and provide information on ways of supporting and improve the protection of victims.
