Malawi Ombudsman | personal security not duly protected

The IOI has recently been informed by the Malawi ombudsman office that the Malawi Ombudsman Ms Tujilane Chizumila was attacked and robbed at her Lilongwe home last month. On 21 April 2013, a group of fully armed robbers broke into her house, threatened all family members present and forced them into one room before stealing cash and assorted items. The Malawi Police announced that they would institute an investigation into the matter, but the criminals have not yet been arrested nor have sufficient security measures been taken to protect the Ombudsman.

Recalling the Wellington Declaration the IOI condemns the attack and calls on the Malawi authorities to guarantee the Malawi Ombudsman’s security.
