Chris Field, President of the International Ombudsman Institute and Western Australian Ombudsman, provided an opening address to the XII Virtual Assembly and Seminar of the Institute of Latin American Ombudsman (ILO), Human Rights and Transition: The Ombudsmen and their contribution to the future, held on 2 December 2021.
The Assembly and Seminar was dedicated to Berta Cáceres, a Lencar indigenous woman from Honduras and defender of the Lencar people, the protection of their territories and the environment.
“I am sincerely grateful to Professor Cristina Ayoub Riche, President, Latin American Institute of the Ombudsman, for inviting me to address this very important event and for allowing me to join in this celebration of Berta Cáceres - her life, her courage and her achievements and the extraordinary contribution of all the indigenous peoples throughout Latin America. The Latin America region, and its Ombudsman, Public Defenders and Human Rights Institutions are admired around the world for their passionate defence of the rights of women, the protection of the environment and for the fundamental human rights of the most vulnerable citizens” said President Field, “You have long had my utmost admiration and, in turn, you have humbled me with your great support for my role as the President of the International Ombudsman Institute.”
