KOREA | Sungbo Lee takes office as new chairman of ACRC

Sungbo Lee took office on 11 December 2012 as new chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission of Korea (ACRC). Chairman Lee, former Chief Judge of Seoul Central District Court, has strived to protect the rights of minorities and the socially vulnerable for about 30 years as a judge.

In his inaugural speech, the new chairman said "the ACRC must work harder to protect the rights and interests of the people and realize a more transparent and fairer society from the viewpoint of the people."

"The vital mission of the ACRC is to protect the rights of minorities and the socially vulnerable so that they cannot be unfairly infringed in this majority-oriented society. I will make every effort to accomplish this mission," the chairman said.

He added that the ACRC will have to play a greater role in promoting the e-Democracy system in the nation by further improving e-People (the Korean government's online complaint portal system) as a channel of communication between the government and the people.

Mr. Lee graduated from Seoul National University and was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining the ACRC, he served as Chief Judge of Seoul Central District Court, Chief Judge of Seoul Eastern District Court, Chief Judge of Cheongju District Court, and Chief Presiding Judge of Seoul High Court.

The chairmanship of the ACRC had been vacant since former Chairperson Young-ran Kim resigned on November 26 due to her spouse's running for the presidency of Korea.
