AOM General Assembly to be held in Malta next year
The General Assembly of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen has welcomed the Maltese Parliamentary Ombudsman’s proposal for the setting up of an International Ombudsman Law Institution in Malta, during its session held today in Tirana, Albania.
In a declaration issued at the end of the General Assembly, the AOM declared that it “welcomes this project that would be of great benefit to the Ombudsman ideals and to strengthening of democratic institutions”.
The AOM encouraged its members to collaborate with the Maltese Parliamentary Ombudsman in the realisation of this project.
The AOM declared its willingness to extend its patronage and moral support to the new institution after having considered its founding statutes and its feasibility.
In his intervention the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Chief Justice Emeritus Joseph Said Pullicino, said that “The objective of this institute is to contribute towards the development of a public service culture characterised by fairness, dedication, commitment, openness, transparency and accountability. It is widely recognised that these values, that the Ombudsman is bound to uphold, lie at the core of this fundamental right”.
The Assembly confirmed the Maltese Parliamentary Ombudsman as Treasurer of the Association and his proposal of holding the next General Assembly Meeting in Malta next year.
