A conference on "Police arbitrariness and racist motivation" was held by the Ombudsman on Tuesday, 2 May 2023, in the hall of the Thessaloniki Bar Association.
At the event, in addition to the Ombudsman Andreas Pottakis, spoke Elisavet Symeonidou-Kastanidou, Professor of the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Kostas Tsitselikis, Dean of the School of Economics and Regional Studies of the University of Macedonia and Stavros Keselidis, Deputy General Director of the Police Force of Thessaloniki.
In the same context, senior investigators of the National Mechanism for the Investigation of Arbitrary Incidents of the Greek Ombudsman office, presented elements of the forthcoming report for 2022, highlighting the 50% increase in reports received by the Independent Authority from citizens in relation to the last, pre-pandemic year (2019) as well as the steady increase (14%) in incidents of racially motivated police brutality.
The event is one of the actions of the act "Actions of the Ombudsman to strengthen good governance, accountability and combating maladministration in the public sector". The project is co-financed within the Good Governance, Institutions, Transparency Program of the EEA Grants (EEA Financial Mechanism) framework which represents the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.
