MALAWI | The Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi participated in a two-day summit on Separation of Powers

Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi, Honorable Grace Malera, recently this week participated in a two-day summit on Separation of Powers in the Capital Lilongwe.

The event was presided over by the President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr.  Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, and it aimed at examining how the country is performing on the doctrine of Separation of Powers.

On the first day of the event, Honorable Malera took part in a panel discussion where together with other panelists they conversed on dynamics around conflicts among government institutions.

The other panelists were the Secretary to the President and Cabinet Ms Colleen Zamba, Executive Secretary for the Malawi Human Rights Commission, Habiba Osman, and Deputy Director for the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Hillary Chilomba.

In her contribution among other things, the Ombudsman decried lack of communication and limited understanding among the government organs on the roles and functions of other institutions within the system.

“There is poor communication, we are not speaking to each other. We need to build those synergies. Need I say that there is need to take politics out of what each and every one of us does. Until we depoliticize these conflicts are bound to continue,” Malera said.

She, however, hailed collaborative initiatives that most government offices have put in place, in an effort to foster understanding and mutual relationships.

“During investigations for instance there are times we come to the dialogue table with responding institutions, through such discussions issues are understood better on a deeper level, that in itself has gone a long way in helping us in the work we do,” the Honorable Ombudsman explained.

Malera also commanded the support and cooperation the Office of the Ombudsman from all government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Parliament and other stakeholders.

During the summit, President Chakwera called for sustained accountability to Malawians from all organs of the state.

The Separation of Powers Conference was organized by the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary arms of government.
