NETHERLANDS | Van Woerkom’s not to become National Ombudsman

In the past two weeks there has been a lot of media attention on the election of Mr Van Woerkom as National Ombudsman of the Netherlands. A statement he made in 2010 about a Moroccan person and the fact that he left his former job with over 300 thousand Euro severance pay gave rise to many reactions.

On Tuesday 17 June the office of the National Ombudsman received notification that Guido van Woerkom has withdrawn his candidature for the post of National Ombudsman, despite his recent election. The Office of the National Ombudsman respects his decision and appreciates the difficulty of his position.

Acting National Ombudsman Frank van Dooren will move quickly to discuss the resulting situation with the President of the House of Representatives.
