World | Women in detention – APT analysis on body searches

The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) has recently published a paper on “Women in Detention - Body Searches” that highlights findings from NPMs around the world and proposes concrete recommendations for change.

While sometimes necessary for security reasons and to prevent the entry of illegal goods into places of deprivation of liberty, body searches can be extremely traumatic for women detainees. Accordingly, the use of body searches needs to be clearly regulated and associated with safeguards and intrusive searches resorted only if absolutely necessary.

In this new analytical piece we explore the issues at stake, review current international standards and showcase good practices. You will also find practical tips for oversight bodies and recommendations for change.
