Seimas Ombudswoman Milda Vainiutė urged the authorities not to adopt amendments to the Republic of Lithuania Law on the Legal Status of Aliens, that would allow human rights violations and pose a threat to vulnerable migrants. After presenting the assessment of the proposed legal regulation, the Seimas Ombudswoman acknowledged that the draft law contradicts not only human rights, but also Lithuania’s international obligations.

In 2020 the work of the Austrian National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The English version of the NPM’s activities in 2020 is now available.

The Office of the Ombudsman’s annual report for 2020 was made public in Parliament on 14 July 2021. During 2020, the office fielded a total of 332 enquiries from members of the public, opened 231 cases for either investigation or informal resolution and resolved 210 cases. By way of comparison, the office opened 30 more cases overall during 2020 than in 2019, despite the pandemic and government lockdown during the second quarter.

The Ombudsman of Hong Kong, China, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the launch of two own-motion investigations. One will examine the operational arrangements for statutory visits under the Justices of the Peace Visit Programme (JP Visit Programme); the other one will investigate problems of alleged illegal operation of kaito ferry service.

L’Association des Ombudsmans et des Médiateurs de la Francophonie (AOMF) lance une plateforme de cours en ligne, au regard de l’importance du renforcement des capacités de ses membres, via notamment la formation. Cette nouvelle plateforme permet la formation massive de tous les collaborateurs de médiateurs, la possibilité de rendre certaines formations accessibles à tous, ainsi que la possibilité de maintenir des échanges permanents entre les membres.
