AFRICA | AOMA General Assembly and 1st Bilateral Conference held in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Institution of the Ombudsman (EIO) hosted the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) - African Union (AU) 1st Bilateral Conference and 4th General Assembly from 4 to 7 November 2014 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. IOI President Adv. John R. Walters delivered a message of support in the opening ceremony of the Conference.  

The Conference and General Assembly was opened on 4 November 2014 and IOI President John R. Walters delivered a message of support in the opening ceremony of the Conference on behalf of the IOI in which he emphasized the need to give life to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between AOMA and the IOI in April 2013. President Walters further pointed out that the institution of Ombudsman has become vital necessary and that no democracy can exist without it. “I called upon governments to create Ombudsman where they do not exist and strengthen existing ones in order to effectively deliver on their mandates”, Adv. Walters said in his speech.

The General Assembly of AOMA adopted the amendments to its Constitution and elected the following Executive Committee Members: President:Mrs Fozia Amin (Ethiopia), 1st Vice-President: Mr N'golo Coulibay (Côte d'Ivoire), 2nd Vice-President: Mr Mohammed Khalfan Rukara (Burundi), Secretary-General: Adv Otiende Amollo (Kenya), Treasurer: Ms Caroline Z Sokoni (Zambia).
