The Spanish Ombudsman, Ms. Soledad Becerril, and the First Deputy Ombudsman, Francisco Fernández Marugán, visited the immigrant detention center of the Zona Franca, in Barcelona. They were accompanied by the Director General of the Police, Ignacio Cosidó, and the Government Delegate in Catalonia, Llanos de Luna.
Soledad Becerril has announced to the competent authorities the main conclusions and recommendations derived from the latest unannounced inspection visits made by the technical staff of the institution to the centre; the last one dated on December 4, after the death of an inmate.
The dialogue with the authorities is an essential part of the role of the Ombudsman of Spain in its dual capacity as High Commissioner of the Parliament responsible for monitoring the activity of the Administration and National Preventive Mechanism against Torture.
In this context of dialogue with the competent authorities, the Ombudsman of Spain makes constant unannounced visits, among others, to all the immigrant detention centres of the country.
