The conference of the European Chapter of the International Ombudsman Institute Ombudsman’s Role in a Democracy will be held on the initiative of Chancellor of Justice Indrek Teder at Tallinn Teachers House from 17-19 September.
Participants from around 30 countries will attend the conference. Speakers will include Chairperson of the IOI European Chapter Peter Tyndall, European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly and Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights Morten Kjaerum. Representatives of Estonian universities who will speak at the conference are Prof Rein Müllerson from Tallinn University, Prof Lauri Mälksoo from the University of Tartu and Prof Wolfgang Drechsler from Tallinn University of Technology.
The role of the ombudsman in the creation of a functioning democracy will be discussed at the conference. How can the ombudsman contribute to the promotion of democracy? How do international and European Union standards affect the activities of the ombudsman? Does the ombudsman compete with the courts or does he or she help them? These are just some of the topics that will be discussed at the conference.
The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) was established in 1978 and more than 150 ombudsmen worldwide are members of the cooperation organisation today. The Estonian Chancellor of Justice has been a member of the International Ombudsman Institute since 2001.
