The Office of the Ombudsman (OoO) has hailed the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for its commitment to strengthen the operations of the oversight institutions in the country.
On 19 September 2023, UNDP embarked on a five-day training of oversight institutions as part of its 50 days of providing training to oversight institutions in specialized investigation skills.
The Office of the Ombudsman and Independent Complaints Commission were part of the first phase of the training.
OoO Executive Secretary Alinafe Malunga said the training was timely and would strengthen the institutions’ skills and knowledge in case handling and management.
“The Office has just recruited over 20 complaint handlers in legal and investigation departments. The training will also serve as a refresher to seasoned investigators to go beyond what we do when handling issues of maladministration," he said.
ICC Commissioner Christopher Tukula said the training would help both the institutions to be equipped with skills that would be beneficial when conducting joint investigations moving forward.
UNDP Chief technical advisor, rule of law and human rights Rowalnd Cole said the training is meant to build capacity of oversight institutions to effectively discharge their duties.
The participants are being taken through human rights, ethics, investigation and report writing among others.
