Ombudsman holds first online outreach event
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall and his team held a virtual regional “visit” to the Sligo Roscommon Leitrim area between 4 and 11 September 2020. As part of its annual outreach programme the office usually holds complaint clinics, engages with public representatives and the providers of public services located in a particular county.

Remote media training for IOI members
Online learning and face-to-face training via videoconference. The IOI is pleased to offer its first online training course with a specific focus on media skills. Participants will learn how to approach media interviews with confidence and focus, how to manage difficult questions and how to bring across key messages. The training will be held on 19 November 2020 and is directed specifically at office holders or their respective media spokespersons. Registration is now open!

Mr. François Boileauis the third person appointed to the position of Canada’s Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson. Prior to this nomination, Mr. Boileau was the French Language Services Commissioner as an independent Officer of the Ontario Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2019.

Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine was appointed as the new Veterans Ombudsman. She graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a Bachelor of Science in Math and Physics and served almost 37 years as an officer in the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (RCEME).

Mrs. Erica R. Smith-Penn has been appointed Complaints Commissioner effective January 1, 2021. His Excellency the Governor Augustus Jaspert appointed Mrs. Smith-Penn to the post after consultation with the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition in accordance with section 110(2) of the Virgin Islands Constitution.

Federal Ombudsman received highest ever number of complaints in 2020
The Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz has said that his office received the highest ever number of complaints during 2020 as 133,521 complaints and disposed of 130,112 complaints. He said that this was the result of its robust awareness campaign launched in the entire country especially in the far flung areas of Pakistan.

Poland must apply internationally recognized standards to ensure Ombudsman can operate without interruption
In view of current developments in Poland, the IOI reissues its official letter of support from October 2020, stating its opinion on provisions regulating the transitional period until a new office holder will be elected for the position of the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights. Poland must apply and consider internationally recognized standards such as the Venice Principles to ensure that the Ombudsman institution is able to fulfil its mandate without interruption in the service of the citizens of Poland.

The 2020 Annual Report of the Commission Against Corruption of Macao was published in the Official Gazette of the Macao Special Administrative Region on 20 May 2021. Enquiry regarding a so-called enforced police assistance of a 13-year-old
A social welfare board requested the police's assistance to transport a 13-year-old girl to one of the National Board of Institutional Care’s residential homes for young people. The transport was delayed partly because the Police Authority and the social services disagreed on whether representatives of the social welfare board should accompany the transport, and partly because there were problems with booking a flight. 17 hours after the girl was taken into care the transport began by car and after 10 hours of transport, she arrived at the residential home
