    IOI took part in side event at the UN High-Level Political Forum 2019 on SDGs

    As part of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York (9 July – 18 July 2019) the Permanent Missions of Austria and Malaysia to the United Nations in New York hosted a side event coving the topic of “Protecting the Rule of Law & Human Rights and Advancing Access to Justice”. Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) organized the event content-wise and invited several renowned officials to speak and debate about actions and strategies to protect the human rights of democracy activists, to ensure that the “Rule of Law” is “human rights’ centered” under SDG Goal 16 and the role of Ombudsman institutions in this context.

    Avoidable death of woman after multiple failings following routine hip operation

    In December 2014, Mrs L went to a pre-operative assessment at the Trust ahead of her hip replacement surgery. Tests showed that she had high blood pressure and high levels of creatinine which indicated that her kidney function was impaired. A few days later, an anaesthetist checked these results and said that her hip operation could go ahead.

    Ombudsman - Education for indigenous population must become a priority

    During the presentation of his recent report entitled 'Contributions to a National Policy on intercultural bilingual education for the benefit of Peru's Indigenous Peoples' Ombudsman Eduardo Vega Luna affirmed: "Indigenous children and adolescents, in the Amazon as well as in the Andean region, are not receiving high-quality intercultural bilingual education, which constitutes a serious flaw in our country's educational system."

    Chief Ombudsman critical of overcrowding at Henry Bennett

    The Chief Ombudsman is calling on the Waikato District Health Board to address overcrowding, and the high use of seclusion and physical restraints, at its Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre. This is the first time he has released his reports into the conditions and treatment of people held in New Zealand’s public health and disability facilities.  All reports on public health and disability facilities will be considered for publication in the future.

    Community faces separation after only chance to remain together was squandered

    An investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has found that a small, tight-knit community was denied the chance to stay together due to a catalogue of errors by High Speed Two Limited (HS2 Ltd). A group of six families, from Staffordshire, whose homes were set to be destroyed because they were on the HS2 route, fell victim of a number of failings by HS2 Ltd over two years, placing them under severe stress and worry, hugely impacting their home lives, jobs, careers and health.

    IOI President undertakes official visit to the Bahrain Open Prison Complex and Souq Al Baraha

    On his second day in the Kingdom of Bahrain, IOI President Chris Field PSM undertook an official visit to the Bahrain Open Prison Complex. The Open Prison Complex comprises a large number of very modern townhouses, with a range of facilities, which prepare detainees for re-entry into the community with a range of skills. A very high level of freedom and rights is accorded to the detainees.

    2021 Report: Cases handled rise 6% to a new high

    In 2021, a record volume of 12,219 new cases were processed, as a result of a 6% annual increase in the number of complaints admitted. Based on 2017, the beginning of the first mandate of the current Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, the accumulated growth in the number of new complaints processed is 57%.

    Control Yuan impeaches judge for misconduct

    In October 2015, the Control Yuan (CY) voted in favor of impeaching a Taipei High Administrative Court judge for sexual harassment against an office assistant. In making its decision, the CY stated that the judge had tarnished the public’s respect for a court judge’s position; his conduct was unsuited to the role of a judge. The CY then sent the case to the Judicial Yuan’s Court of the Judiciary for trial.

    Results of Ombudsman’s investigation into Housing Department’s arrangements for senior citizens and converted one-person units

    The Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced at a press conference on 13 July 2023,  the completion of a direct investigation into the arrangements for Housing for Senior Citizens (“HSC”) and converted one-person (“C1P”) units by the Housing Department (“HD”), and made eight recommendations for improvement to HD.
