Public Defender appeals to Venice Commission
The Public Defender of Georgia, Mr Ucha Nanuashvili, has addressed the Venice Commission concerning the draft amendments to the Constitution of Georgia, which had not been taken into account within the framework of the State’s Constitutional Commission, during the evaluating period. In his letter the Public Defender focuses on the amendments aimed at weakening the standards of protection and implementation of fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in the current edition of the Constitution.

Cooperation between Austrian and Azerbaijani Ombudsman contributes to solution in tragic case
The case of a young Austrian athlete who was severly injured in the Olympic village in Baku during the First European Games in 2015 has finally been resolved in part due to the successful international cooperation between Austrian Ombudsman Dr. Günther Kräuter and the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan Prof. Elmira Suleymanova.

Ombudsman Board presents Annual Report 2010
"In 2010 the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) took care of the requests of more than 15 000 people, and 6 600 investigation procedures were initiated to control administrative decisions. In more than 17 percent of all investigation procedures the AOB confirmed a case of maladministration," AOB Chair Peter Kostelka summarised last year's activities on the occasion of the annual report presentation on 28 April in Vienna. An international version of the annual report in English highlighting human rights related cases will be published in June 2011.

Proportion of Indigenous Women in Federal Custody Nears 50%: Correctional Investigator Issues Statement
Ottawa, December 17, 2021 – Today, the Correctional Investigator, Dr. Ivan Zinger, released new data that shows that the proportion of incarcerated Indigenous women has continued to increase unabated, and is nearing 50% of all federally-sentenced women. On January 21, 2020, the Office of the Correctional Investigator reported that the proportion of Indigenous men and women in federal custody had reached a new historic high, surpassing 30% of the overall incarcerated population. The combined men and women Indigenous proportion in federal corrections is now 32%, and climbing.

UN resolution on ombudsman institutions
On 11 November 2010 the United Nations General Assembly’s third commission adopted a resolution on "The role of the Ombudsman, mediator and other national human rights institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights". In its resolution the UN welcomes the rapidly growing interest throughout the world in the creation and strengthening of the Ombudsman, mediator and other national human rights institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights and recognizes the important role these institutions can play.
