"Es una obligación del Estado asegurar el derecho de los niños y niñas a la educación," dijo el Defensor del Pueblo, Eduardo Leblanc González, avalando el regreso a clases presenciales, durante el acto de inauguración del foro: “Derecho a la Participación Efectiva de los Niños, Niñas y Adolescente (NNA), en el marco de la conmemoración al aniversario No. 32 de la Convención de los Derechos del Niño”, en la sede del Parlamento Latinoamericano y Caribeño (PARLATINO), en Amador.

Chris Field, President of the International Ombudsman Institute and Western Australian Ombudsman, provided an opening address to the XII Virtual Assembly and Seminar of the Institute of Latin American Ombudsman (ILO), Human Rights and Transition: The Ombudsmen and their contribution to the future, held on 2 December 2021. The Assembly and Seminar was dedicated to Berta Cáceres, a Lencar indigenous woman from Honduras and defender of the Lencar people, the protection of their territories and the environment.

The Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the launch of a direct investigation to examine the Government’s operational arrangements for the pilot scheme on Community Care Service Voucher for the elderly. The Government’s current elderly care policy is to promote “ageing in place as the core, institutional care as backup”.

On 2 December 2021, at 12.30 pm, Professor Maria Lúcia da Conceição Abrantes Amaral took up her post in Parliament as Ombudsman for a second mandate, in a ceremony presided over by His Excellency the President of the Assembly of the Republic.
