The COVID-19 pandemic has placed much of the world’s population in some form of isolation, confinement or quarantine. In this extraordinary situation, deprivation of liberty has taken on new dimensions.

ENNHRI and Mental Health Europe have published a new report on supported decision-making for people with disabilities. It highlights what supported decision-making entails in theory and in practice, as well as outlining developments in Europe and the role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in ensuring compliance with international standards.

The 2019 Annual Report of the Public Defender of Rights of the Slovak Republic (PDR) provides information on the PDR’s work on protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural and legal persons, strengthening the oversight of public authorities and initiating reforms of law and public authority.

This report draws attention to a problem that has become a regular subject of ‘public interest disclosures’ to the Ombudsman - nepotism in government schools. It highlights the need for school principals and staff to check and follow integrity obligations, and the need for public authorities to look for effective ways to embed integrity in their workplaces.

New dates (23 - 28 May 2021) have been agreed for the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) 12th General Assembly and World Conference in Dublin.
