On 19 July 2024, Toronto’s Ombudsman Kwame Addo released an update on the work his office’s new Housing Unit has done during its first year of operation. Established in July of 2023, the Housing Unit at Ombudsman Toronto investigates and reviews the planning and delivery of the City of Toronto’s housing services, policies, and programs to make sure they are fair and uphold Torontonians’ human right to adequate housing.

The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman and Professor Chris Gill (University of Glasgow) are conducting a joint research project examining the role of ombudspersons in the protection of refugees and asylum seekers (the OPRAS project). The corresponding survey, whose aim is to understand the work of ombudspersons in this area and to identify good practice, is still open until 27 September 2024. El Defensor del Pueblo de los Servicios Públicos de Irlanda del Norte y el profesor Chris Gill (Universidad de Glasgow) están llevando a cabo un proyecto de investigación conjunto que examina el papel de los defensores del pueblo en la protección de los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo (el proyecto OPRAS). La encuesta correspondiente, cuyo objetivo es conocer el trabajo de los defensores del pueblo en este ámbito e identificar buenas prácticas, sigue abierta hasta el 27 de septiembre de 2024. Ahora también puede descargarse la encuesta en formato Word para facilitar su cumplimentación cuando sea más de una persona la que la rellene.

A sensitization program was held on 7 July 2024 at Jubilee Baptist Church, Osogbo, Osun State Nigeria, to raise awareness about the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) and its services. 

Virgílio da Silva Guterres ‘Lamukan’, Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, has urgently called upon the Minister of Health and her team to address pressing issues affecting hospitals in Timor-Leste. Speaking at Hotel Timor on July 10th, Guterres emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “We cannot afford to let the situation in hospitals deteriorate further.”

The Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson, Mr. François Boileau, has formally opened a systemic examination into whether the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) respected taxpayers’ rights in its administration of bare trust filing requirements for the 2023 tax year.
