On Monday, 30 October 2023, Ombudsperson Gaby Schwarz welcomed the Hungarian Ombudsman Ákos Kozma at the Austrian Ombudsman Board. During the work meeting, they agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation. Similar to the Austrian Ombudsman Board, the Hungarian institution also functions as a National Human Rights Institution and a National Preventive Mechanism.

A report published by the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) into how trees are protected has found that despite 369 tree protection breaches reported between 2019 and 2022, only one resulted in enforcement action being taken, and none led to prosecution. The report also found there was a lack of clear information for the public on Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), and that information about which trees are protected should be made more accessible.

Investigations into complaints of unfair treatment resulted in recommended solutions across a myriad of issues in 2023. In 2022-23, the office received 4,713 total cases, 3,251 of which were inquiries through our live intake line. The report also provides the readers with information about the Ombudsman’s role, investigations statistics, and case stories demonstrating the office’s focus on administrative fairness and ensuring fair treatment for Albertans.

A peer review of the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (UK) was held in Coventry (UK), in November 2023, by a specially designated panel led by the Ombudsman of Greece and IOI Regional President (Europe) Andreas Pottakis. Former Ombudsman of Ireland and former President of the IOI, Peter Tyndall, Professor of socio-legal studies at the University of Glasgow, Chris Gill, and Kersten England, former Chief Executive of Bradford City Council and of York City Council, were the other three members of the peer review panel.

L’ombudsman de la Ville de Laval, Nathalie Blais, a déposé le 10e rapport annuel de son bureau lors de la séance du conseil municipal du mardi 7 novembre. Ayant pour thème « Agissons ensemble », ce rapport fait état notamment des activités du Bureau de l’ombudsman pour l’exercice terminé le 31 décembre 2022; une année marquée par la collaboration et l’amélioration des opérations.

On 1 November 2023, following the announcement of the new Francophone immigration targets, the Commissioner of Official Languages, Raymond Théberge, stated that these new targets were a step in the right direction to stop demographic decline of the Francophones outside of Quebec.
