Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass’s report, "Misconduct in public organisations: A casebook", tabled on 9 August 2023, sheds some light on her investigations into misconduct within the public sector. The report delves into seven case studies, discussing individuals engaging in misconduct and systems failing to manage misconduct risks.

 

Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva submits to the National Assembly a legislative proposal for the criminalisation in the Criminal Code (CrC) of offences involving the intentional infliction of physical or mental pain or suffering that degrades human dignity. She announced this on 1 August 2023, in the programme “This Morning” on bTV in connection with the Stara Zagora case, where an 18-year-old girl was cut with a dummy knife by a man and as a result of the 24 injuries inflicted she received 400 stitches.

La Defensoría del Pueblo informó que, en el primer semestre del 2023, la cifra de notas alertas por mujeres desaparecidas registradas por la Policía Nacional reportó un incremento superior a 200 casos con respecto al mismo periodo del año pasado. En efecto, en los seis primeros meses de este año se registraron 2889 notas de alerta, que evidencian un incremento en relación a la cifra de 2633 notas reportadas entre enero y junio de 2022.

Ombudsman Punjab, Major Azam Suleman Khan (Retd) (Hilal-i-Imtiaz), presented the annual report of the Office of the Ombudsman Punjab for 2022 to Governor Punjab, Muhammad Balighur Rehman, at the governor's house. Major Azam Suleman Khan elaborated on the noteworthy aspects of the annual report, stating that the ombudsman office successfully resolved 29,970 complaints out of a total of 31,149, resulting in an impressive 96% resolution rate.

On 7 August 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman administered the Oath of Secrecy to 40 of its members of staff and interns. The Director of Legal Services and Advisory, Chipiliro Mangulama, said the ceremony is in line with Section 10 of The Ombudsman Act, which stipulates the need for officers in the office of the Ombudsman to treat with utmost confidentiality any information made available to them in the course of their work.

This year, the Australian and New Zealand Ombudsman Association (ANZOA) celebrates its 20th anniversary. As such, the 2023 ‘Meeting of the Minds’ gathering of ANZOA’s Members was an opportunity for reflection on the evolution of Ombudsman in Australia and New Zealand and the challenges ahead.
