    First Remote Media Training held

    On 19 November 2020, the IOI successfully held its first session of the IOI Remote Media Training. The interest in this training was enormous and participants from all six IOI world regions applied. In this first training session, a total of 18 persons from 18 different Ombudsman institutions from all corners of the globe took part in this high-end media training.

    Ombudsman challenges ISS position on unemployment benefit for victims of domestic violence

    The Ombudsman’s Office has pleaded with the Social Security Institute (ISS) the right to unemployment benefits for victims of domestic violence who have terminated their employment contracts under the terms of the Decent Work Agenda Law, in force since May 2023. A different position is being adopted by the ISS, which only recognises this right in cases of termination after 1 December 2023.

    New Ombudsman appointed

    Zoran Pašalić, lawyer from Belgrade, was elected as new Protector of Citizens (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Serbia. Mr. Pašalić was born in 1958. In his long career he worked on legal issues in number of  companies, and as of 2003 started career as a judge. Prior to the election as the new Ombudsman, Mr. Pašalić was President of Appellate Misdemeanor Court.

    CY’s Committee on Social Welfare and Environment Hygiene Affairs Conducts Circuit Supervision at Taiwan Centers for Disease Control

    Report 2019 - more than 51,000 requests and 9,800 new instructed processes

    In 2019, the Ombudsman received 51,313 requests through the various channels available to citizens (6.6% more than in 2018), and 9823 complaint procedures were opened, representing an increase of 5% in relation to 2018. Compared with 2017, the growth in new complaint procedures is 26%; taking 2016 as a reference, the increase is 42%.

    Investigation into the management of maintenance claims against public housing tenant

    As a result of a number of complaints to the Ombudsman and wider community concern, the Ombudsman conducted an investigation into the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Housing's processes for determining and pursuing maintenance debts against public housing tenants. The investigation found that many public housing tenants were charged thousands of dollars for the repair of damaged public housing, even when there was no evidence they caused the damage. The investigation also found that the department was wasting public resources and breaching its responsibility as a Model Litigant by making unreasonable demands for cost recovery and pursing claims to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

    Online press conference – The Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) presented their 2020 annual report

    The members of the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB), Mr Bernhard Achitz, Mr Walter Rosenkranz and Mr Werner Amon presented on the basis of the annual report the AOB’s investigation results from 2020 and gave, on the basis of some selected complaints and their own perceptions, an insight into the work of the monitoring and human rights institution. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the AOB published its annual report in three volumes for the first time. In addition to Volume 1 ‘Monitoring of public administration’ and Volume 2 ‘Preventive human rights monitoring’, Volume 3 ‘Covid-19’ covers all those observations related to the 2020 Covid-19 measures.

    2020 Annual Report of the CCAC of Macao published in Official Gazette

    The 2020 Annual Report of the Commission Against Corruption of Macao was published in the Official Gazette of the Macao Special Administrative Region on 20 May 2021.
