    The NSW Ombudsman has tabled a special report titled Investigation into inmate discipline in NSW correctional centres in Parliament on 21 August 2024. The report follows an investigation involving a systemic examination of how inmate discipline is managed across all correctional centres. The inmate disciplinary system deals with inmates who are alleged to have committed a ‘correctional centre offence’ while in custody.

    Ombudsman reaches seven ADCs with Mobile Accountability Clinics

    The Office of the Ombudsman has in the past week been to eight Area Development Committees (ADCs) in Nkhata Bay district with Mobile Accountability Clinics. The Office has been conducting meetings with about 40 members of each ADC and later held public rallies, raising awareness about the functions of the office and how local communities can utilize its services.

    The year at a glance: While statistics do not provide a full picture of the Ombudsman’s work, they do show that the office continues to deal with a large number of matters. This year, the Ombudsman received 36,765 complaints and notifications. This includes 8,724 formal matters and 28,041 informal matters.

    Parliament adopted legislative package based on monitoring of Human Rights Defender

    Under the new Constitution of 2015 the mandate of the Human Rights Defender (HRD) has been expanded by including the power to facilitate the improvement of the regulatory legal acts related to human rights and freedoms. Following the Constitutional Amendments, a new Constitutional Law on Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia was adopted in December 2016. Within this constitutional function, a new practice of reflecting monitoring results in draft laws by the HRD Office is being exercised.
