    Public Complaints Commission and Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund collaborate on public awareness campaign

    On 23 April 2024, the Federal Capital Territory’s Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Comrade Dalhatu Ezekiel Musa, met with the Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Mrs. Maureen Allagoa, in her office in Abuja. They both agreed on the importance of a joint public awareness campaign to ensure that employees and employers alike are informed about the protections and obligations defined under current social insurance laws. They also discussed implementing joint initiatives to enhance accessibility of their services to the public.

    Tabling of the 2023–2024 annual report : Toward full implementation of the modernized Official Languages Act

    On 7 May 2024, the Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada, Raymond Théberge, tabled his 2023–2024 annual report in Parliament. The modernization of the Official Languages Act in June 2023 marked the beginning of a new chapter not only in the history of official languages, but also in the history of the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages.

    The new Seychelles Ombudsman

    The new Ombudsman of Seychelles, Mr George Emmanuel Robert, was sworn in on Thursday, 16 May 2024, in a ceremony at State House. At the swearing-in ceremony, Mr Robert stated that he was truly honoured and humbled to have been appointed the fifth Ombudsman of Seychelles and is ready to work for the people of Seychelles to bring the office to the level that it was envisaged since its creation in 1993.

    Malawi's First Ombudsman dies

    The Office of the Ombudsman in Malawi on June 2, 2024 woke up to the sad news of the death of the first Ombudsman in the country the Honorable James Makoza Chirwa. Ombudsman Grace Malera and other members of the senior management attended the funeral on behalf of the office where she hailed all the strides that the office registered during the late Chirwa’s tenure.

    Parliamentary Ombudsman submitted Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament

    On 25 June 2024, Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen submitted his Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho. In 2023, there were a total of 7,124 complaints (6,613 in 2022). This is just over 500 (7.7%) more than the previous year. The largest number of complaints concerned social welfare 1,136 (997), the police 855 (821), healthcare 803 (751) and criminal sanctions 591 (672). In the reporting year, 6,876 complaints were resolved. The corresponding figure in 2022 was 6,857.

    England’s Health Ombudsman has warned that women and babies are being put at risk after a worrying rise in the number of investigations about maternity care.     Reminder - Invitation to participate in a survey for the OPRAS project

    The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman and Professor Chris Gill (University of Glasgow) are conducting a joint research project examining the role of ombudspersons in the protection of refugees and asylum seekers (the OPRAS project). The corresponding survey, whose aim is to understand the work of ombudspersons in this area and to identify good practice, is still open until 27 September 2024. You can now also download the survey in Word format to facilitate its completion where more than one individual is completing it.

    The Ombudsman of the Republic of Angola celebrates for the first time the International Day of the Ombudsman

    The event was held on October 10th and included an opening speech by the Angolan Ombudsman, the representative of the National Assembly, the interim UN representative in Angola, the PNUD representative in Angola, followed by presentations of virtual speeches by Her Excellency the President of the International Ombudsman Institute, Dra. Nashieli Ramírez Hernández, the Executive Director of the International Ombudsman Association, Dra. Ellen Miller, the Secretary of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA), Dra Caroline Sokoni, and other representatives of Angolan state bodies.

    Passing of an Ombudsman Trailblazer

    The Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Advocate Tlotliso Polaki, regrets to announce to the international Ombudsman community, the passing of Honourable Mohale Henry Nt'saba on the 19th November 2024, a few months before his 100th birthday. Honourable Nt’saba was the pioneer Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Lesotho, who established the office from inception.

    Government interference puts Yukoners rights at risk

    Ombudsman publishes 2012 Report in Portuguese

    The Report reveals that in 2012 the Portuguese Ombudsman opened 7027 cases, of which 7015 stemmed from a complaint and 12 from his own initiative. This represented an increase of 1215 cases, i.e. 21%, in relation to 2011. In total, 27218 complainants addressed the Ombudsman.

    Dame Beverley Wakem resigns as IOI President

    At the 2014 meeting of the IOI Board of Directors, Dame Beverley A. Wakem resigned from her office as IOI President. Dame Beverley, whose term as Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand will end next year, took the occasion of the Vienna Board Meeting to bid farewell to her fellow members on the Board and hand the Presidency over to Adv. John R. Walters, Ombudsman of Namibia.
