    Start of IOI membership evaluation process

    The IOI has started the first phase of its membership evaluation process, which will be conducted on a rolling basis. The first 60 members have received the evaluation forms in our three official languages and can choose which one suits them best. We highly appreciate your active participation in this confidential evaluation, which has a non-punititve charater. The final report of this membership evaluation process will be presented by the Office of the Secretary General at the 2020 World Conference in Dublin.

    Ombudsman observes - mental health services in central region require extra efforts

    On 5 December 2017, Malawi Ombudsman Martha Chizuma released a systemic report titled “Out of Sight, Out of Mind.” This is a report on an investigation into allegations of maladministration in the mental health service delivery and injustices on patients with mental disorders in the Central Region of Malawi.The full report is available here.

    New Control Yuan members welcomed at pre-inauguration meeting

    Control Yuan President Chang Po-ya welcomed all 11 new CY members at a pre-inauguration meeting held January 18, 2018, two days after the nominees were approved by the Legislative Yuan. In a speech at the gathering, she expressed the expectation that all members will work together in exercising their constitutionally-granted independent ombudsman powers in order to ensure good governance.

    Czech and Austrian Ombudsmen to discuss cross-border problems concerning social security benefits

    Anna Šabatová, Czech Ombudswoman, and Günther Kräuter, one of the three members of the Austrian Ombudsman Board, together with their colleagues from the social security departments met in Vienna on the 20th February and discussed the cross-border problems concerning the application of the EU Regulation on the Coordination of Social Security Systems in the EU Member States.

    Austrian Ombudsman supports Japanese research project

    On 20 March 2018 Ombudsman Kräuter welcomed Mr Mahito Shindo, Assistant Professor at the School of Sciences of Waseda University, Tokyo. In a current research project Mr Shindo examines to what extent Ombudsman institutions can ensure the quality of administrative environmental decision makings. The Austrian Ombudsman Board was pleased to contribute its expertise to this academic work.

    Depriving the inmates' rights must be argumented, necessary and proportional

    Depriving the rights on liberty does not automatically lead to the loss of other civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights. Amongst them is the right to correspondence, which was denied to a prisoner who wanted to complain against the quality of service and price of the business providing services in prison. The Ministry of Justice accepted the Ombudswoman's recommendation and instructed all criminal bodies to prevent such situations in the future.

    Complaints to Toronto Ombudsman up in 2017

    City of Toronto Ombudsman Susan Opler released the institution's 2017 Annual Report. She says that in 2017, her office handled nearly 1650 complaints about City services, up 7% from the year before. Poor communication continues to be a factor in many complaints her office receives. Ombudsman Toronto published nine reports in 2017, making 65 recommendations that improved fairness in how the City of Toronto serves people.

    The IOI’s 3rd Best Practice Paper will be officially launched by IOI President Peter Tyndall at the IOI Conference on Own Initiative Investigations, which will be hosted by the Office of the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) and held in Belfast on 22 and 23 October 2018.

    Belize Ombudsman Delivers Speech at Control Yuan

    Ombudsman of Belize, Lionel Arzu, visited the Control Yuan (CY) on 30 October 2018. During his visit, he delivered a speech in which he introduced the Belizean Office of the Ombudsman’s promotion of good governance and protection of human rights. He also engaged in open and friendly discussions with CY members and staff.
